Why Training Doesn’t Change Behavior

  • CNY ATD Conference | October 26, 2026 4355 State Street Skaneateles Falls, New York, 13153 United States (map)

Employees complete the training. They pass the assessments. They attend the workshops.

And then… nothing changes.

That’s because learning completion isn’t the same as behavior adoption.

At the 2026 CNY ATD Conference, Julie Ann Whitten will lead an interactive session exploring what really stands between learning and lasting behavior change.

Why Training Doesn't Change Behavior goes beyond course design and completion metrics to examine the human and organizational conditions that determine whether people actually apply what they’ve learned.

Julie will introduce a practical framework for identifying the hidden barriers to adoption, including trust, leadership alignment, communication, capability, and reinforcement. Attendees will learn how to spot the early warning signs that learning isn’t translating into performance and what L&D and talent leaders can do about it.

Participants will leave with practical strategies to:

  • Distinguish learning completion from true behavior adoption

  • Identify barriers preventing employees from applying new skills

  • Recognize when learning is failing to translate into workplace performance

  • Strengthen leadership support and reinforcement

  • Measure success through adoption and behavior, not just attendance and completion

Because the goal isn’t to get people through the training. It’s to change what happens when they get back to work.
