Big Girl Panties Diaries — Entry #35: The Grown-Up Guide to Waiting for the Good Stuff

We live in the age of now. One-click orders. Next-day delivery. Swipe right. Add to cart. Buy the shoes. Eat the cake. Post the pic. Wait for the dopamine hit of likes rolling in.

Don’t get me wrong — I love a little instant hit as much as the next girl. I’ve been known to refresh tracking updates like it’s my side hustle. But here’s what they don’t tell you in that TED Talk about willpower: the satisfaction that actually lasts is never instant.

Want a stronger body? That yoga class won’t give you abs in an hour. Want a healthier relationship? That tough conversation probably won’t feel good while you’re in it. Want a career that lights you up? Sorry, there’s no “add to cart” button for that, either.

And at work? Same rules apply. That big promotion? Not overnight. Building trust with your team? Not a one-and-done. Nailing a project? Sorry, no “expedited shipping” for learning curves, feedback, or all those awkward drafts you’d rather never share.

The irony is, the more we chase the instant, the emptier we feel in the long run. Or maybe that’s just me — sitting here with a closet full of Amazon Prime regrets and a phone battery drained from doom scrolling.

I’m learning (slowly, painfully, with more slip-ups than I’d like to admit) that real, soul-level gratification is delayed by design. It’s built in the mundane: the daily choices to say no when you want to say yes. The pause before you react. The boundaries you hold for yourself — and your work — even when nobody’s watching.

Big Girl Panties Rule: Not every craving deserves a “yes” right now. Sometimes you have to wait for what’s really worth it. Delayed gratification is the grown-up version of dessert. You’ve gotta earn it. You’ve gotta wait for it. And when it finally comes? It tastes so much better.

What about you? Where are you trading short-term “likes” for long-term satisfaction? What’s your guilty instant-gratification habit — and is it worth it?
